Ind. Decisions - Bosma, House should focus on more down-to-earth issues

"Bosma, House should focus on more down-to-earth issues" is the title to an editorial today in the Munster (NW Indiana) Times. Some quotes:

Indiana has many pressing needs to be addressed by the leadership of the Indiana General Assembly. Prayers in the Legislature is not among them.

But House Speaker Brian Bosma is continuing his fight for the right to turn the House podium into a pulpit. * * *

The judge's order does not interfere with individual legislators' right to use the name of any deity they want in their own prayers. That right must not, and cannot, be abridged.

But praying on behalf of a group, especially one meant to represent the entire state, is different. As Bosma said, people must be tolerant of other religious traditions in a pluralistic society.

That's what has made silent prayer so popular. That practice allows everyone a moment to pray individually, and yet together.

Keep the invocations more general, to be more reflective of the entire state. And focus attention on solving the state's real problems, not this controversy.

Indiana has many more urgent matters that must be addressed.
