Ind. Courts - Bruce Markel III sworn in as judge of Jackson Superior Judge
The Jackson County Tribune has a report today by Aubrey Woods on the swearing of Judge Bruce Markell III. Some quotes:
Former Jackson Superior Judge Frank W. Guthrie kept a simple one-word sign on his desk during his 30-years on the bench, which ended with his Dec. 3 retirement. The word on that sign? Patience.Guthrie doesn’t know if his successor, Bruce Markel III, kept that sign, but Guthrie said if Markel doesn’t have it there right now, it will be back soon. “He needs to remain as calm and patient as possible,” Guthrie said of the 58-year-old Markel, shortly after he was sworn in Sunday afternoon at the court on Seymour’s west side.
Guthrie also has given him an even better piece advice, Markel said. “He told he would be around, and I can call him anytime,” Markel said. Markel also has a lot of other help nearby, including present Jackson Circuit Judge Bill Vance.
“He’s a great friend,” Markel said. “I’ve already talked with him, and I’ll be talking to him again.” Vance, who just finished up his seventh year on the bench, said the best advice he can offer Markel is to never second-guess himself. “You work hard to make a decision, move on,” Vance said. “You can’t go back.” * * *
Markel also can look to at least one other source for advice. “I’m still a senior judge, and I told him I can help him anytime,” former Jackson Circuit Judge Robert R. Brown said. Brown also had a simple piece of advice for Markel: “Just be fair.”
Markel has said he will run for election to the office in 2008, when Guthrie’s current term would expire. Markel is the first Republican judge in Jackson County since John M Lewis III, who left the bench in 1964 after serving as circuit court judge.
