Ind. Courts - Status of Randolph County Courthouse demolition
The last ILB report on the endangered Randolph County Courthouse was dated Dec. 6th and titled "More bad news re Randolph County Courthouse: Commissioners say 'It's time to move on with demolition'."
Today Rachael Zdyb of Newslink Indiana reports:
WINCHESTER, Ind. (NLI) - It's been eight months since a 2-1 vote to tear down the 128-year-old Winchester Courthouse. And still the building remains standing. * * *The story includes photos of the possible relocation sites. One problem [Commissioner Drew Wright] has run into - relocating courthouse employees. The initial plan was to move into an old Wal-Mart on the east side of town, but that option has been postponed because another buyer purchased the building. But Wright said there are other options.
"We've also looked at the old Carter Lumber building, had some discussion with the Whitley company and handling it and of course we've looked at scattering the offices throughout downtown business offices," Wright explained.
Since there hasn't been any progress with the demolition plans, Wright said residents are beginning to wonder when things will start to happen again.
"I really hope that that happens real soon," he said. "I would love to see it happen in our next meeting but I think even if we make the motion to continue those discussions in the next meeting, that we should probably wait till the next meeting after that."
But for now, the courthouse will continue to stand in the center of the town until a new location for employees is found and a demolition date is set.
