Ind. Courts - Randolph County Courthouse story continues

Joy Leiker writes in the Muncie Star-Press today:

WINCHESTER -- For the first time in two years, on Monday the Board of Randolph County Commissioners was given an estimate of the cost of expanding and renovating the 130-year-old courthouse.

The $7 million figure is likely to go up, said Ron Ross of Martin Riley, the architect and engineering firm hired by the county to oversee the project. Ross said the $7 million includes only construction costs.

But it's the first time since June 2005 estimates were presented to officials in the ongoing discussion surrounding how to repair the existing structure and make more room for county offices. At that time, estimates, which included everything from the addition of an annex to destruction of the current building and construction of a new structure, ranged from $4.7-9.6 million.

The current proposal -- which county commissioners haven't voted on yet -- calls for the construction of a two-story annex with a basement. In all, the current drawings look to nearly double the courthouse space, from 8,207 square feet to 14,302 square feet.

Here is a list of many earlier Randolph County Courthouse stories.
