Courts - Notable SCOTUS opinions this morning
Reynolds v. United States (SCOTUSblog case page here). From this morning's SCOTUSblog "live blog":
Amy: We have the second opinion in Reynolds v. US, the sex offender case. The opinion is by Justice Breyer, but delivered by the Chief Justice. The vote is seven to two, reversing the decision below. The Court rules that the federal sex offender law does not require those who committed their offenses before the enactment of the law to register before the Attorney General validly specifies that the registration requirements do apply to them.US v. Jones (case page here):
Amy: The decision is unanimous, but there are two concurring opinions. Attaching a GPS device to a vehicle and its use to monitor the vehicle's movements do constitute a search.MORE COMING
Tom: Five members of the Court importantly do *not* resolve the question whether the search was reasonable. That could be a major limitation on the decision.
